Synopsis:

My name is Harriet Manners, and I am still a geek.

Harriet Manners has high hopes for the new school year: she’s a Sixth Former now, and things are going to be different. But with Nat busy falling in love at college and Toby preoccupied with a Top Secret project, Harriet soon discovers that’s not necessarily a good thing…

Review:

Oh, Jeez. If ever there was a need for a giant box of tissues then this is the time.

I guess All That Glitters was expected. What I mean is, Harriet's spent a year modelling in Russia, Japan, New York. Sooner or later her face is going to be on billboards and perfume advert campaigns. Flyers. posters, youtube, and leaflets. Yes, Harriet is the face of a perfume campaign and she's everywhere. And now all her classmates see her as a model too.

Harriet is very clever but she's not very savvy. Her social etiquette is seriously lacking but usually she gets by thanks to her best friends, Nat and Toby. Except now Nat is at college and constantly 'busy.' Plus, for the first time ever, Toby ignores her at school, has forgotten to stalk Harriet and even tells her to Go away and be with her new friends. Harriet is confused but carries on in her own way. After a day at school she manages to annoy just about everyone even the new sixth formers. The day after, her face is everywhere and suddenly, without Harriet even realising it, everyone wants to be her friend.

When she does see her own made up face around town she has a panic attack. I guess she thought it would never be known because of her previous antics. However, as Nats and Toby back away, she begins to enjoy her new friends. But are they really her friends?

Harriet is called away to an exotic modelling shoot in Morocco. When she returns she showers gifts to all and sundry except for mean Jasper who has taken an instant dislike to her. She can't understand why. Harriet plans a party. Only the party doesn't turn out quite as Harriet would hope. But her true friends do come to the rescue....finally.

I suppose this is a story that is true in all of us. We all want to be liked. So what if Harriet is a model and people hang around with her? She deserved friends after everything she's been through. But what happened at the end is horrific. Harriet learns her lesson the hard way.

Most touching in this book is the back and forths with Nick. Harriet does honestly believe she's done the right thing by sending Nick away to get his own life back. Even though it's cost her her own heart. Her intentions are honourable.

What Annabelle says at the end is quite true. Harriet is brave, she does inspire and she is always herself but she tries a little too hard. But hey, that's something we've all done.

A really heartbreaking but optimistic episode in Harriet's life is now behind her. Let's now see how she grows from it in Sunny Side Up (Geek Girl #4.5)
